The course also allows you to think creatively and be more independent, while creating exciting and innovative food products.

Course Overview

In the video below, Mrs Kulandhaisamy, Subject Leader for Design Technology, explains the different topics you will study on the Hospitality and Catering course:

Level 1 / 2 Hospitality and Catering is made up of two different units. You will be required to complete each unit independently, using the knowledge and skills you have developed during the course.

Unit 1

  • The Hospitality and Catering Industry (External Exam)
  • This is a written exam which is taken at the end of year 10 and you will take this exam on a computer.
  • The exam is 90 minutes long and is worth 40% of your final grade.

Unit 2

  • Hospitality and Catering in Action (Internally Assessed Controlled Coursework)
  • This is a controlled assessment that lasts 9 hours and is worth 60% of your final grade.

This is a classroom based portfolio, and a practical exam which is completed under exam conditions. You will be asked to plan, prepare and cook two different dishes in response to a brief set by the exam board WJEC Eduqas.

You will need to demonstrate an understanding of the nutrients in the dishes you are making, as well as the effect that different cooking methods can have on the nutritional value of food. You will also need to demonstrate that you are aware of which nutrients different groups of people need.
