Attributes of a Most Able Learner in Geography

A Most able learner is someone whose progress exceeds age related expectations and has the capacity to achieve or perform at the highest levels.
Most able Geography students will be identified through formal assessments and the quality of work that can be evidenced in the classroom.

Most able Geographers will be able to understand geographical ideas and concepts and apply them to the real world. When using data, they will be able to interpret, analyse and draw effective conclusions.
Most able learners will possess a curiosity of the wider world and will actively seek to expand their geographical knowledge. They will complete self-directed study, ask challenging questions using a wide variety of geographical terminology.

Learning Outside of the Classroom

We strongly recommend engaging with geographical topics in a variety of ways. This could be through visiting places and observing geography in the real world or keeping up to date with current local and global events. We also encourage most able students to read geographical literature and watch films/documentaries in order to develop their knowledge and understanding.

How We Support Most Able Learners in Lessons

Disciplinary Skill/Knowledge Tailored Support
Be able to accurately use geographical vocabulary
  • Geography lessons have specific T3 vocabulary. These words should be used in the work with fluency in relation to key geographical concepts.
Interpreting sources of information
(maps, diagrams, photographs, GIS)
  • The most able learners will have access to real life written, numerical and visual sources that they will be able to accurately interpret, analyse, justify and draw conclusions from.
Synoptic links
  • The most able learners will be able to make links between geographical concepts and topics. They will be able to articulate how geographical concepts can have a wide range of impacts.
Literacy
  • More able learners can access specific journals or articles within lessons which have a wider geographical theme.

What Can Parents/Carers Do To Support?

By supporting your child’s passion and enthusiasm for the subject you can help them to develop a deeper understanding of the synoptic links between different geographical concepts. This can be done through:

  • Checking all work and homework is completed thoroughly.
  • Ensuring that regular revision and retrieval practice is taking place
  • Encourage learners to ask for help if they are struggling.
  • Encourage learners to visit places of geographical interest and importance (coastal/glacial/urban/rural environments).
  • Encourage learners to engage with geographical literature and current affairs.
