Attributes of a Most Able Learner in Health and Social Care

A most able learner in Health and Social Care is someone who shows a keen interest in the subject. This is reflected in the work they produce in class as well as the completion of homework to a high standard. Lessons will consist of ‘extension tasks’ and stretch activities which learners are able to attempt which will further embed key concepts.

As this subject consists of two internally assessed components which take place during an assessment window, a most able learner would show good organisational skills during this time frame, ensuring their planning and preparation for each task is completed to a high standard. Most able learners would demonstrate commitment and motivation by accessing ‘booster’ sessions during the assessment window to ensure all aspects of each task is completed before submission. Most able learners will show a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the tasks by writing a fully detailed account addressing all aspects of the task. Most able learners will present their work well ensuring that their knowledge is clear and easily understood in every task.

Learning Outside of the Classroom

Most able learners will engage in the ‘Enrichment Passport’ that is accessible to all learners in their folders and also google classrooms. The ‘Enrichment Passport’ provides the opportunity to listen to podcasts, watch films and documentaries and read fiction and non-fiction books that are all linked to the health and social care curriculum. This allows learners to further embed their knowledge and understanding of key topics covered throughout year 10 & 11 which will further support them when completing all 3 components.

How We Support Most Able Learners in Lessons

Disciplinary Skill/Knowledge Tailored Support
Apply powerful knowledge to assessment tasks
  • Content delivered during classroom lessons. Guided support given.
Literacy
  • To use T3 language within assessments. Language should be used in context to provide a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the task.
Personal Knowledge
  • Learners are required to provide their own personal opinion when completing component 1. Learners are encouraged to use their knowledge and understanding of the topic to ensure a detailed explanation is given.
Extracurricular study
  • Learners are encouraged to plan and prepare for assessment tasks during the assessment window.
Classroom study
  • Targeted higher order questioning. ‘Stretch’ and ‘Challenge’ tasks.

What Can Parents/Carers Do To Support?

Parents/carers can ensure learners attend all lessons as attendance is imperative throughout this course. If learners are absent during an assessment window this can have a big impact on a learners grade for that component as well as their overall grade at the end of year 11. Parents/Carers can encourage learners to attend ‘booster’ sessions to ensure all aspects of each task are completed to the highest standard.
