Attributes of a Most Able Learner in PE, Sport and Dance

A Most Able learner in PE, Sport and Dance is one who has a keen passion for the subject, which is reflected in their performance against the ME in PE and Pearson marking assessment criteria grids.

In practical lessons they possess strong skills and can apply these skills to a range of progressively challenging situations (Physical ME). They appreciate the importance of leading a healthy active lifestyle and engage well with our extra curricular offer (Healthy ME). Most Able learners can use strong critical thinking skills to outwit opponents, employ specific tactics for success and can problem solve in order to improve skills and knowledge (Thinking ME). They show positive leadership skills, can operate well as an individual and as part of a team, and show high levels of sportsmanship and etiquette when performing (Social ME). They are a learner who shows a well rounded performance in these four key areas.

In theory lessons based in classrooms, Most Able learners show organisation around coursework deadlines and take lead roles within group work. They complete homework tasks well and also complete additional reading around key concepts to further support learning. They demonstrate confidence when accessing higher order questions and can demonstrate a strong level of critical thinking when working independently.

Overall, Most Able learners in PE have a drive and motivation to improve themselves and others around them acting as role models for the subject in and out of school.

Learning Outside of the Classroom

We strongly recommend completing additional reading around this subject either generally or linked to specific sports and activities that we are completing. Learners can engage with a number of online texts and books to support their learning and further understanding of the subject. Other media such as sports documentaries, films, magazines and podcasts can further enhance learner knowledge in relation to sport and PE. Some of the many examples can be found using the following web link https://www.pescholar.com/insight/sport-documentaries-and-films.

Where possible we would always encourage our learners to immerse themselves in the world of real sport too whether that be participating socially and for fun with friends or whether that be more competitive for the many local grassroots clubs in the area. There are many amateur and professional sporting clubs and teams within the North East and beyond which also provide the opportunity to view high level sport in a live capacity that our young people can learn from.

What Can Parents/Carers Do To Support?

By supporting your child’s passion for PE, Sport and Dance you can help them develop not only a deeper understanding of the subjects, but also critical skills they can use throughout their education and beyond. Encouraging your child to be physically active promotes a healthier lifestyle which has further benefits both in and out of the classroom. Participating in our extracurricular programme will support practical performance and development further allowing learners the opportunity to either compete or develop in a social environment. Introducing your child to the world of sport and physical activity outside of school will also encourage them to immerse themselves in the world of sport providing real life examples of the skills and techniques they may be asked to develop. This would also support the provision of real life examples that can be used to support written answers in theory lessons.
